I have said it before and I will say it again – I am a BIG fan of precious metals, and I still think that they have a prominent place in the jewelry industry for wedding rings and wedding bands. But a few years ago, alternative metals like tungsten and titanium became all the rage. In fact, stores started loading up on titanium and/or tungsten wedding bands and wedding rings – by the truck load.
All seemed well, and the price points were less than gold and platinum wedding bands and wedding rings, but then something curious happened – online prices for titanium and tungsten dropped dramatically. If you did a little research – and in some cases VERY little – you could find a titanium wedding band or wedding ring for between $29.99 and $99.99, and in many cases even the same for tungsten.
How can any retail store compete with these prices? Essentially, they can’t, and have to offer titanium and tungsten for a higher price in many cases. The problem is that they have to keep prices fairly close to what is available online, and then margins are skewed lower. Many retailers made alternative metals a priority over precious metals, and when the alternative metal price point crashed, so did a store’s ability to make money. To put it simply – they had to sell MUCH more to make the same amount of money as they did on a gold or platinum wedding ring or wedding band. MUCH MORE!
It’s a tough situation for a retail store. When trends change drastically, those who go “all in” with a trend will suffer the most. Keep positioning lower cost merchandise in front of the customer, and that’s all they will buy. Larger stores that have always featured a nice variety of wedding ring and wedding band merchandise (i.e. Tapper’s in Michigan, Reis Nichols in Indianapolis, Charleston Alexander in Virginia) seem to stay alive during such a tough economic time. Hopefully stores will start to educate consumers about their precious metal and alternative metal choices, and more of these same consumers will buy (or even invest in) their bridal jewelry purchases instead of just settling for the cheapest thing in the jewel case or on the Internet.

If you are confused by the platinum to palladium comparison, and want a good place to start, then you may want to read Platinum to Palladium Comparison for Jewelry. It is a very straightforward article that lays out all the important facts about platinum and palladium. In essence, platinum is the Mercedes of metals, while palladium is the nicely equipped Honda Accord.

Wow! A message board discussion that started in 2006 comes alive in 2010? Pretty funny.
Over on Pricescope.com, the discussion starts as a white gold against platinum comparison, and then moves into a chat about a polishing cloth that helps to almost refinish jewelry. This polishing cloth sounds very cool.
I will say this – I find it surprising that even in 2006 (when the thread started), there was still a white gold vs. platinum debate. Hopefully the industry has come a long way towards educating the consumer even more. If not, here’s a free brochure that will help with choosing the right metal for your wedding ring or wedding band. And in 2010, I have found that the consumer makes decisions based upon design, and then hopefully that design is available in the metal that’s best for them.

Ceramic wedding bands are becoming more and more popular – in particular black ceramic wedding bands. They look pretty cool, and the one thing that I will say about a ceramic wedding band is that it definitely is different. After all, not everyone has a black ceramic wedding band.
But be careful, as they can not be sized. But since this price seems very affordable, it may be worth replacing every year or so, unless you are sentimental about the ring that you get married in. If that is the case, then I’d stick with a precious metal wedding band or wedding ring. They cost more now, but they will last in the long run.

Robert Bernard Jewelers in Rockville, Maryland keeps a dog in their jewelry store, and the dog eats an expensive diamond that fell to the floor. I guess this is the price of having man’s best friend around, and that diamond must have smelled pretty good. Maybe someone ate a cheeseburger while handling it?
Anyway, the diamond ends up in the dog’s tummy, and guess who had to follow the dog around and eventually sift through its poop? The store owner. Talk about a crappy job (literally).

Apparently Ms. Lohan feels that the “milkaholic” baby named Lindsay is a characterization of her, and even her lawyer states that she is now known as a one named celebrity. So let’s see – there’s Cher, Madonna, Fergie, possibly Pink and now Lindsay? Ummmmmm – no! Sorry, but this is just a frivolous lawsuit by someone that is most likely just looking to create buzz and publicity. And besides, being called a “milkaholic” might be a good thing, and this might interfere with her reputation as being a past abuser of booze and cocaine.

This just goes to show how silly the world of Hollywood can be. And if this lawsuit has merit, then I'll be scanning every movie, ad, book, video game and magazine for characters with my name as well.

There’s a new silver in town that’s great for wedding bands, and it’s known as Argentium Sterling Silver. Actually, Argentium Sterling Silver is not new at all. But it’s currently very affordable and is great for jewelry in general.
Argentium Sterling Silver wedding bands will not easily tarnish, can be cleaned with a cloth and some mild soap and can actually be considered a green metal that safe for the environment. Novell is one American wedding band manufacturer that has created styles specifically designed in Argentium Sterling Silver, so be sure to ask your local jeweler about them.

"Amazon.com’s best selling wedding bands" is an article currently featured on WeddingPlanningandAccessories.com about the top selling wedding rings and wedding bands that are on Amazon.com today. Surprisingly, most of the featured wedding rings and wedding bands are made from tungsten or titanium and are quite cheap.
From WeddingPlanningandAccessories.com:
I guess when you look at what is currently considered best selling wedding bands on Amazon.com, it really is a sign of the times. There are a lot of tungsten and titanium wedding bands that are selling for less then what you might typically see in a brink-and-mortar jewelry store. And in the Top 100, you can see affordable precious metals such as sterling silver and 10kt or 14kt gold. And if you take a look at this titanium wedding band by a new designer, they are selling it for just $9.99! So that really tells you what the true cost of titanium might be. And also that the American public is looking for great deals.
It’s a shame that when it comes to the Internet in America, precious metal wedding bands seem to be forgotten. And according to this article on NationalJeweler.com (Blue Nile bullish on U.S., eyes growth overseas), even a big online retailer like Blue Nile is looking to expand overseas for further growth. Hopefully that will help the precious metal wedding band market overall.

Hey – Groundhog Day is over, so the next big holiday is Valentine’s Day. So for the “honey” in your life, why not get them a wedding band made with pink gold? Since most gold wedding bands are white or yellow, pink is a fun color that can be worn for a special occasion or even as a right hand ring. Pink represents passion, but to me it is also very soothing. And you don’t see a pink wedding band every day – do ya?
So for this year’s Valentine’s Day, be a little different. Instead of ordinary jewelry, give your sweetheart a pink wedding band. They’ll love it!
For help purchasing a pink wedding band, please visit the Novell wedding band retailer in your area.

Below is currently featured on the blog Wedding Planning and Accessories. This is a very vital concept that can help redefine exactly what “Made in America” once meant, and what it should mean. It’s very thought provoking. And hopefully a “Jewelry Made in America” movement will be successful.
Let the “Jewelry Made in America” games begin. American wedding band manufacturer Novell Design Studio, in co-operation with jewelry industry trade publication The Jewelry Book, has launched the beginning stage of their “Jewelry Made in America” initiative to help raise awareness – and also raise the bar – for jewelry products that are fashioned by America-based craftsmen. This project will highlight a variety of jewelry manufacturers from around the country.
This is a very important theme to remember in these tough economic times. While a lot of what is imported for jewelry is much less expensive, there may be an issue of quality. It’s also important to recall that once upon a time, the term “American made” meant a higher quality product. This is a time to analyze exactly what “Made in America” should mean, and aspire to reach a better standard.
An upcoming edition of The Jewelry Book will include a product gallery for American-made jewelry products. The issue will also include a thoughtful and very original article by Novell’s Bruce Pucciarello, which will illustrate the demise of the true meaning of “Made in America” as it began with the auto industry, and bled into jewelry making as well.
Stay tuned!

I just saw an article on NationalJeweler.com about a new iPhone application for trying on diamond rings, and it is also mentioned on WeddingPallandingandAccessories.com and the blog for Engagement 101 Magazine. I guess that I’d say this might be a gig deal, especially since the jewelry industry as a whole tends to be archaic or “old school” with its marketing methods.
Stuller, a company based in Louisiana that is known for being able to overnight generally generic jewelry to less than forward-thinking retailers, has entered the 21st century. Their new iPhone application allows a consumer snap a picture of their hand to virtually place a diamond ring design on their finger, and then be able to share that image through Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, etc. It’s a fairly simple way to show a family member, friend or significant other what you like for a ring. From what I can tell, Stuller is the first in the jewelry industry to have embraced such an application. Usually the jewelry industry is slow to adapt such cutting-edge technology, so this really is a surprise to see – especially from such an older company like Stuller! It will be interesting to see what other companies follow Stuller into this territory, whether it be for wedding bands, engagement rings, fashion jewelry or even wedding dresses.

Here’s another example involving confusion about the common metals use for creating wedding rings, engagement rings and wedding bands, and this one involves palladium (and is from the UK). Future brides are discussing palladium and the general durability of other metals used to create bridal jewelry on a message board, and some share their experiences in a jewelry store.
This is a quote that to me really stands out:
“…The palladium sales woman said ‘all metals wear each other down over time so it wont make any difference if you have white gold or palladium sat next to your E(ngagement) ring’…”
Okay. When you scratch gold, you scratch metal off. When you scratch platinum or palladium, you just move the metal, as very little mass is lost. You can refinish platinum and palladium over and over. Therefore the reality is that not all metals wear down over time. Platinum and palladium have been used for years in the automotive industry, and not just as a decoration, but as a part of the engine. You can’t use a metal for an engine part if it’s going to easily wear down. In theory, platinum and palladium wedding bands should last a lifetime. And that’s longer than most marriages!
Also in this message board topic, it is mentioned that it actually is a good idea to have two rings that go next to each other – like an engagement ring and a wedding band would – be the same metal so that one metal won’t wear the other down. I have never really noticed that before, but a harder metal would wear down a softer one. So my advice would be to definitely pick rings created with metals that have similar properties.
I also found it peculiar that the subject of scratching and wear of a ring is an issue, but most of the individuals have rings created in 18kt gold. If scratching and wear really is a concern, then why choose 18kt gold? It’s softer than 14kt gold! Well, at least in America it is. Gold itself is a soft metal, so when you add other elements to gold, it then becomes harder. So let me get this straight – you are worried about scratching a wedding band or piece of jewelry, so you pick a metal that’s less durable than platinum or palladium? I am really scratching my head over this one.

Are you looking for wedding bands and wedding rings, but don’t necessarily like what you find in ? Try Flickr. At the very least, you will see a lot of artistic and creative wedding band and wedding ring images, and many are from individuals' own wedding picture collections. You can see what brides and grooms actually purchased or had created for themselves. Flickr is a great resource for wedding band and wedding ring ideas.

While most wedding bands and wedding rings are hand cut from extruded tubing (think about how you cut cookie dough when it came in a roll, or how you cut slice off a piece from a stick of pepperoni), another way to create wedding bands and wedding rings is through a process called “casting.” Casting involves waxes and molds, and can be somewhat time consuming. Basically, hot metal is pouring into the mold and allowed to solidify. It’s a manufacturing process that is good for creating a piece of jewelry that has a more complex shape or several components to it. When buying a cast wedding band or wedding ring , look for a smooth, even finish, with no holes, bumps or porosity. Jewelry artist Beth Cyr writes about her recent experience casting a set of plain wedding bands on her blog.

Here it is! Within a relatively short period of time, Weddingrings-weddingbands.com has reached its 101st blog post. The goal of this blog is to help highlight interesting wedding bands and wedding rings, and to also offer practical advice about nearly anything related to bridal jewelry.
There is a lot of information about precious metals and jewelry in general that’s floating around out there. And unfortunately, not all of it is 100% accurate. I am glad to offer my opinion as well as highlight places to go in order to get the right facts so that consumers can enter a jewelry store armed with more than just what may have been already told to them from the other side of the counter. Jewelry is a tricky business, so the more tools that you have – the better! Jewelry is an investment, and an informed consumer is the jewelry industry's best customer.

I received the following question in an e-mail. A consumer wants to know what the average weight of a wedding band is. This is not really a question that can be answered in a general manner, as wedding bands come in a variety of widths, thicknesses, metals, and designs.
Q: What does a typical man’s wedding band weigh? Before I go ahead, are there any pointers you might have?
A: Your question is a tough one to answer, as not all wedding bands are made the same. For example, my company has many styles that have a nice weight to them, but we also have a line of lighter weight wedding bands to meet some stores' much lower price points (less metal = lower price). A majority of our publicized wedding bands are handmade and have comfort fit, so that would account for more metal in the design and therefore a higher price than another company that would use less metal and create thinner rings. In my opinion, with wedding bands and jewelry in general, you typically get what you pay for a lot of the time. There are many manufacturing methods as well that impact the final weight of a ring. I can say that every precious metal wedding band or wedding ring that my company makes is created by individual craftsmen right here in America. Our styling ranges from a more basic design - not quite plain, but not too decorative (i.e. clean lines, different edges and finishes) - to more ornate woven designs and rings with diamonds. Sometimes the more elements to the design, then the more weight to the ring.
As far as pointers go, my best advice is to learn about the most common metal options for wedding bands and wedding rings, and then go from there. Here's a link to help you out - http://www.novelldesignstudio.com/choosing_your_metal/index.php.
Obviously, there are a lot of variations to this answer. I can only relate my observations related to my company's wedding bands and wedding rings and other products that I have personally felt while visiting jewelry store clients. But hopefully my answer gives a little bit of insight as to the fact that wedding bands and wedding rings come in all shapes, sizes and variations, and they are not all made the exact same way.

Barefootmommies.com features a pretty nice post highlighting wedding bands and wedding rings made from tungsten. Tungsten is a cool looking metal, and feels unique and sleek to the touch. But you can also break a tungsten wedding ring with a hammer. And it can not be sized. So while the price is right for a lot of non-precious metal wedding bands and wedding rings – what do you do if you gain or lose weight and need the ring sized? Wedding bands and wedding rings made from precious metals such as platinum, palladium and gold can be sized down the road if need be. While a sizing issue is probably not on your mind now, it certainly can be after those extra trips to the buffet!

This little factoid is currently being featured in WrightandLato.com’s wedding band news section. Shortly after being launched, WrightandLato.com has been consistently showing search results for the very competitive term “wedding bands” in Microsoft’s new search engine Bing. In the past, there usually has been a period of aging for most new websites before they gain relevant or consistent search engine results. But WrightandLato.com has maintained a fairly constant position since its re-launch in early June 2009. Not a bad little item to hang your hat on! Especially since most results for the keywords “wedding bands” are usually online retailers. Many wedding band manufacturers fail to understand the importance of search engine marketing, and instead rely upon response to traditional marketing methods such as print advertising to earn their wedding band buying audience.
As seen on WrightandLato.com/news.php:
WrightandLato.com a hit with Bing!
WrightandLato.com – a recently re-launched and redesigned website for Wright and Lato wedding bands – seems to be a hit with Microsoft’s new search engine Bing. WrightandLato.com has been earning consistent listings for Bing’s top 50 search results for the very competitive term “wedding bands.” The newly introduced Bing accounts for almost 10% of the “big three” search engine market share, and seems to show growth on a monthly basis. Bing has been positioning itself as the new decision engine with more relevant search results than Google or Yahoo!View WrightandLato.com’s approximate position* for the keywords “wedding bands” on Bing.

Despite this metal’s high market value at this time, platinum is worth every penny. Why? Because platinum is a strong metal that holds your diamond in place, and is also a naturally white metal (unlike white gold) that ages very, very well. A platinum wedding band, wedding ring or engagement ring can literally last a lifetime. Also keep in mind that when you scratch platinum, very little mass is lost, so a platinum wedding band or wedding ring can be refinished over and over to look just like new. And unlike titanium or tungsten, platinum wedding bands and wedding rings can also be sized.
Here’s some of the latest news about a great online resource for platinum – PreciousPlatinum.com (as featured on wedding band manufacturer Novell's wedding band news section):
Platinum Guild International, the jewelry industry’s leading authority on platinum wedding bands, wedding rings and engagement rings, has recently re-launched their consumer website - PreciousPlatinum.com. The newly redesigned site not only features cutting-edge updates to many of PreciousPlatinum.com’s most popular online components such as the Design Gallery, but now also features brand new innovative tools to help retailers and designers reach their target consumer and ultimately grow their businesses.

Are average brides and grooms spending more or less on their wedding bands, wedding rings and engagement rings in this current recession? According to jewelry industry trade magazine JQ International, they are spending a nice amount of money, but cutting back on other big ticket items such as food service during the reception and wedding dresses. Today’s soon-to-be married couples are also spending conservatively on extras like bridal gifts and accessories. But, despite the economy, the wedding industry marches on!

Have you ever heard the term “rhodium plating” Well, if you have purchased a white gold wedding band or wedding ring, then you most likely should have heard the term. Rhodium plating is applied to the outer part of your white gold wedding band to give it a brighter and whiter appearance. You see – white gold is not really white. It is in fact yellow gold that is mixed with nickel or palladium (along with a few other elements) to make it appear white, but in fact it’s actually more like a pale yellow. And that’s where rhodium comes in! However, over time the rhodium can wear off and needs to be reapplied.
Here’s an article which explains the “411” about rhodium fairly well. When you are considering white gold for your wedding band, wedding ring or engagement ring, you should fully understand that white gold is not naturally white like platinum, and what role rhodium plays in its initial very white (but very temporary) appearance. I have heard consumers complain that “your white gold turns yellow,” but white gold does have a yellow coloring. Facts! Get the facts before you make or wedding band or wedding ring purchase.

Here’s a fun article by one up-and-coming bride about her search for wedding bands. But in my opinion, it strikes me as funny that they are looking for the cheapest wedding band possible for him (the bride mentions that a $900 Scott Kay band was just too expensive, but a $113 wedding band was just right). Hey - we all have budgets. But the man’s poor wedding band seems to be an after thought more times than not. The future groom eventually settles for a tungsten band, and tungsten is a pretty cool looking metal. I wonder if the jewelry store mentioned that tungsten can break?
In any case, as long as the bride and groom are happy, then that’s all that matters! Good luck to them both.
We had a daunting task ahead of us today: wedding band shopping.
I don't think either of us were looking forward to this - but it had to be done! We're both pretty indecisive, it can take forever for us to make a decision - we have to weigh all the options.
We started at Long's in Natick - friendly service guy (well, they all were everywhere we went, which was good), nice selection. The bands were pricey, but we narrowed down a couple to keep on "the list." Next we went to Barmakian, right down the street. Our sales guy was also getting married in October (next year) so that was fun. I must say, they had a HUGE selection and their rings were much more reasonably priced. We added a couple more rings to the list.
By this time, his finger is throbbing from the countless amount of rings being pushed onto it, and he's not really feeling anything. The sales people told us, "when you find the right one, you'll just know." Hmm, I was dubious - they said the same thing about finding a wedding gown and I never had that feeling...

Another option for wedding bands is vintage wedding bands. Vintage wedding bands can be found in jewelry stores that generally specialize in estate jewelry, although many retailers have a small vintage or estate section anyway. Vintage wedding bands often have a unique look and a particular detail that is not really common among many of the wedding bands, wedding rings and engagement rings on the market today. So if you are searching for a piece of jewelry that has a unique look, then vintage might just be for you.
Here’s an article offering free tips on selecting vintage wedding bands - Vintage Wedding Rings: The New Trend.

Yesterday, Yankee manager Joe Girardi spoke on WFAN’s Mike Francesa sports talk radio program to talk about Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), a rare genetic disorder genetic disorder that does not allow the skin to properly repair itself from exposure to UV light sources. Children afflicted with XP must avoid sunlight all together. Due to the economic downturn, a special camp for those afflicted with XP can only operate for two weeks this year. Let’s say that again – due to the economic downturn, a special camp for those afflicted with XP can only operate for two weeks this year. Does that sound fair? I really don’t think so! Please become familiar with this disease, and perhaps you’ll discover a charitable bone in your body that you forgot about. It will not take much to help these children have a little more comfort.
Below is part of an article that first appeared on WeddingPlanningandAccessories.com, and now also is being featured on NovellDesignStudio.com, WrightandLato.com, a blog at TransWorldNews.com, and Novell’s wedding ring blog. If you can also help “spread the word” about Xeroderma Pigmentosum, then I would really appreciate it.
Please help create awareness for children with Xeroderma Pigmentosum.
Okay. So the wedding is over, and your life is getting into full swing. And for most brides and grooms, eventually the idea of children comes into the picture. While we all hope and pray that everyone’s children will be born happy, healthy and live a long and normal life, unfortunately many will not. With this in mind, a very rare condition affecting hundreds of children in America, and thousands worldwide, recently got my attention.
Yesterday, New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi was a guest on WFAN’s Mike Francesa sports radio program. Mr. Girardi was speaking very passionately about Xeroderma Pigmentosum, an unusual genetic disorder that does not allow the skin to properly repair itself from exposure to UV light sources. Children afflicted with Xeroderma Pigmentosum – or XP – must avoid sunlight all together. A lot of their time is spent indoors and out of sunlight’s way, but they can venture outside at night after the sun is down. And on July 24th, the Yankees hosted children with Xeroderma Pigmentosum at a night game against the Oakland A’s to help raise awareness of this condition (the Yankees won 6-3 – by the way).
A summer camp created to host children with Xeroderma Pigmentosum from all over the world has existed since 1996. The Camp Sundown Retreat House in Craryville, New York, offers a unique night camp program which gathers families and scientists from around the globe to share support, recreation, information and friendship under the safety of the stars. However, due to a lack of funds, the camp had to be shortened from its normal length of eight weeks to just two this year. Therefore, families with a child afflicted with Xeroderma Pigmentosum will unfortunately be lacking the complete Camp Sundown experience.

Here’s an article about platinum by National Jeweler’s Catherine Dayrit. It’s always interesting to keep up with how the economy affects the sale of such a premium metal like platinum. But as I’ve said time and time again – if your wedding band, wedding ring or engagement ring is meant to last a lifetime, then wouldn’t it make sense to spend a little more on the metal that actually can last a lifetime?
From NationalJeweler.com:
Las Vegas--The selling prowess of the bridal category is undisputed these days, with retail jewelers and designers overwhelmingly agreeing that recession or not, customers are still buying engagement rings and wedding bands.
But when it comes to what, exactly, is selling, there's a higher level of contention, especially as to consumers' choice of precious metals. Even though platinum prices have lowered, skirting ever closer to the price of gold, quite a few jewelers interviewed by National Jeweler said that 18-karat gold remains a big seller in bridal.
At press time, platinum was trading at just under $1,169 per ounce compared with gold's $948-per-ounce price. The differential was nearly zero six months back, when platinum was selling at $823 per ounce and gold at $822 per ounce. And the figures from both dates contrast sharply with data from May of 2008, when platinum's price was more than $1,000 higher, per-ounce, than the price of gold.
Diane Breitman of Queen of Diamonds in Calabasas, Calif., says the price differential is one that cost-conscious customers remain sensitive to. She will sometimes hold three different rings before customers: one in 14-karat white gold, another in 18-karat and the third in platinum, and oftentimes the customer will have a hard time discerning which is which.

A longstanding jewelry industry trade publication - Modern Jeweler - is suspending the production of its magazine. It's never a good thing when the jewelry trade publication landscape is down to just a handful of quality magazines. Hopefully, this situation is just temporary, as Modern Jeweler has its niche. And unfortunately, the first expense to be cut in jewelry is advertising (which is always a BIG mistake in my eyes). After all, everyone in the jewelry industry screams "BRAND! BRAND! BRAND!" But as a whole, I doubt most in the jewelry industry really understand what "brand" is and how to sustain it. Perhaps a strictly online model for Modern Jeweler will help bridge the gap to stronger economic times. The jewelry industry always needs its voices.
From the Modern Jeweler blog:
After 108 years of serving the jewelry industry, Modern Jeweler is suspending publication. We’d like to thank all the people who worked hard over the years to make every issue worth reading. We’d also like to thank the retailers and manufacturers who shared their time and expertise with our readers each month.

Are you shopping for your wedding band, wedding ring or engagement ring, yet can’t really get a handle on why you should buy platinum? Well, PreciousPlatinum.com wants to help. The popular platinum-oriented website has recently launched a special section designed to act as a wedding band, wedding ring or engagement ring buyer’s guide to everything about platinum. Platinum is a pure and precious metal that can literally last a lifetime. And the best thing about platinum is that when you scratch a piece of platinum jewelry – it loses little mass and can be refinished to look like new. Platinum wedding bands, wedding rings and engagement rings also age very well. So take that gold!
You can also download the key points of the platinum buyer’s guide as a free PDF, so you can take it on the train to work, share it around the dinner table, or even walk into a jewelry store with it just to make sure that the jeweler has their platinum facts straight. As I have always said – an educated consumer is the jewelry industry’s best customer.
And be sure to ask if the wedding band, wedding ring or engagement ring was made in America using American jewelry craftsmen. During these tough economic times, we need to recycle American dollars back into our economic system. So please – ask if the item of jewelry in your hand was made in America.

While analyzing my web traffic for some of my blogs, I noticed that a consumer stumbled upon one after typing in the phrase “palladium rings – what’s the deal?” into the Google search box. Though not quite what I would consider a typical approach to searching for palladium facts, I thought that I’d take a moment to help explain what the “deal” is with palladium. Ready? Good. Because here we go!
Palladium is a naturally white metal that is in the platinum group metal family. It is generally found in many of the same places that platinum is found, but it is NOT the same as platinum. Can it be considered similar? Sure. It is naturally white, durable and will not turn yellow over time like white gold. And at one time, the price of palladium was more than platinum. But is it the same? No. But I will stand by my claim that it is similar, and definitely a better choice over white gold if platinum is not an option. However, it is no longer is the same league value-wise as platinum. As I have always believed – if you want the best white metal available for wedding bands and wedding rings, then platinum is your metal.
Go ahead – scratch your platinum wedding band or wedding ring. The metal moves around a bit, and it appears that the ring is scratched. But very little metal is actually scratched off. So as times goes on, you can have your platinum wedding band or wedding ring finished over and over again without losing much mass. In theory, a platinum wedding band or wedding ring should last beyond your lifetime. It can be passed down to your children and then down to their children.
But palladium also has its place in the wedding band and wedding ring industry. It currently fits into a nice price point while still being a naturally white metal. I do like the metal quite a bit, although as I mentioned before that I am a “premium” kind of guy – hence my love for platinum. However, it’s also important to understand the differences between all the metals that can be used for wedding bands and wedding rings so you can correctly weigh the benefits and make the decision that’s right for you. After all, an educated consumer should be the jewelry industry’s best customer. And unfortunately, the right information about palladium seems to currently be lacking in the jewelry industry as a whole.
So – for the individual that typed “palladium rings – what’s the deal?” – I hope this has helped.
By the way, another blogger’s experience with palladium is missing a little bit of expertise on the jeweler’s end. And if a reputable jeweler can be confused with some of the facts, then ANYONE can! So please – research as much as possible before traveling to your local jewelry store.

Do you ever wonder if your wedding ring or wedding band is made in America? Or do you really even care? I have been reading and writing more and more about the importance of buying products which are made in America – especially since we seem to be entrenched in such a tough economy. Like the automotive industry, the jewelry industry as been hit hard as well. Many manufacturers are turning towards importing less expensive jewelry products from overseas. And while the price is certainly less, the quality may be less as well.
WeddingPlanningandAccessories.com is currently featuring two blog posts stressing the importance and impact of buying jewelry that’s made in America. One post talks about wedding bands and wedding rings, while another discusses the American jewelry industry in general. Personally, I understand fully the economic effect of buying jewelry that’s made in America. And I believe it’s time for American consumers to really start thinking about where their wedding bands, wedding rings and jewelry in general comes from. Yes – most metals, diamonds and gems have to be imported and are possibly only available from other countries. But where is the finished product made? Is that wedding band or wedding ring assembled domestically by local American craftsmen? These are issues that need to be thought about.

As seen on TranWorldNews.com:
Novell Design Studio, a leading American wedding band manufacturer which specializes in wedding band customization, has always emphasized the philosophy that platinum is the superior metal choice for both men's and women's wedding bands. Yet for each individual, the same metal can also be symbolic of very different things. For her, platinum represents the pure expression of love shared. It is precious, rare and eternal. For him, platinum is a magnificent, distinguished and resilient mineral that separates the man wearing it from those that do not. No other precious metal offers the same level of excellence.
Why Choose Platinum For Your Wedding Bands?
Love lasts a lifetime, and so should your platinum wedding bands. With the inflated costs of nearly everything associated with throwing a proper wedding (the cake, music, ice sculpture, cuisine, etc.), platinum is one of the few items that may actually increase in value as time passes. Your platinum wedding band can potentially become an heirloom, so you can pass it down to future generations. Imagine the face of your child, grandchild or great-grandchild lighting up as they inherit a genuine piece of family history. Looking for a white gold wedding band with a unique hammered finish? Novell’s MAX3098-7GCEW is a white gold wedding band that is 7mm wide. This wedding band also has a hammered finish over what kind of resembles Roman numerals. I have also heard this wedding band design referred to as “an engineer’s ring” due to it unique structural appeal. Perhaps a diehard Trekkie would find it groovy as well!

Palladium is a naturally white metal that has been around for quite some time. And at one point, its market value was even higher than platinum. Today, the market value of palladium is even less than that of gold. Yet palladium’s popularity has yet to really take hold. If the economy is really on everyone’s mind and consumers are looking to pay less for their wedding bands or wedding rings, then palladium makes sense for jewelry. However, many wedding band and wedding ring retailers have yet to fully lend their support to palladium. It is definitely a metal to look into for your wedding band or wedding ring. Palladium is an economical choice for men's wedding bands.
